This is the ultimate comfort food. Enjoy this classic recipe if you’re looking for something warm, creamy and a little crunchy, and wonderfully cheesy. If you prefer the extra gooey version, the macaroni and cheese is done after you mix the pasta and seasonings into the cheese sauce – skip the breadcrumbs and baking altogether. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this macaroni and cheese recipe!

Ingredients

  • ½ lb. macaroni
  • 5 Tbsp butter
  • 3 Tbsp flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 Tbsp sour cream
  • 3 cups cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1 tsp salt or more to taste
  • ½ tsp pepper

  • ⅛ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Prepare a casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package direction and set aside.
  3. Melt 3 Tbsp butter in saucepan and whisk in flour gradually.
  4. Whisk in milk ½ cup at a time, using a spatula to scrape the bottom and sides to prevent burning or sticking to the pan.
  5. Add sour cream and whisk to combine.
  6. Add 2 ½ cups of cheddar cheese a handful at a time while stirring into the sauce.
  7. Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce and mix well.

  9. Melt the remaining 2 Tbsp butter and mix with the bread crumbs.
  10. Pour macaroni and cheese into a casserole dish, and top with the buttered breadcrumb mixture.
  11. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes.
